Stupid Phrases for People in Crisis

My favorite one is “It’s God’s plan”. Was it God’s plans when innocent lives were taken on Sept 11, 2001? Is it God’s plan when children are kidnapped? Until you’ve taken a walk a mile in my shoes, don’t give me or my family advice. The only advice I will take is from my family or stroke buddies.

  1. God will never give you more than you can handle. While some may believe it is theologically correct, depending on your definitions, it is singularly unhelpful to the person who is neck-deep in a crisis, trying to swim against a Tsunami. A wonderful phrase recently came from Support for Special Needs. They suggest changing this from “God will never give you more than you can handle” to “Let me come over and help you do some laundry.” This strikes me as even more theologically correct.
  2. It gets better. Yes, yes it does. But right then, it’s not better. And before it gets better, it may get way worse.
  3. When God shuts a door, he opens a window.Maybe, but maybe not. Maybe he just shuts a door. Maybe there is no window. There was no window for Job. There was a cosmic battle that raged as he sat in distress. There…

Yes, I’ve heard some these also. But, if you need me to come do your laundry, I’m there! 😄

Tammy, no help is needed on the laundry! 🙂

I’m not going to say WHERE but Ricky has heard some of these phrases used. Or, you just need to be content. That’s a hell of thing to say to someone whose wife nearly died. People are ignorant!

Yes Agree completely. The God I believe in created the world & his work was done. He doesn’t do miracles & he doesn’t do harm! he would never inflict pain on one of his children just as you never would! these types of sayings are totally ridiculous in my opinion & are usually said by misguided individuals, not out of malice but rather out of ignorance. I am not religious yet I believe in God but if in doing so it meant I had to believe that somewhere God had a hand in any suffering in this world I would very quickly become a non believer. He is our creator & our Saviour when our time is at its end but in between we are on earth as earthly human beings, subject to illness, famine, torture, greed, whatever, all caused by man, not God. Pray to him for comfort, thank him for your surgeon or Doctor or care worker or family as he created them all to help us here on earth. “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all”. Offering help of any kind to someone who is suffering is the best thing you could do, don’t preach, don’t judge & please don’t use these silly non sensensicle sayings & let’s all pray we never have to walk a mile in their shoes.
